چکیده

Algebra Interview 1 The first interview began with Edwards asking “What is mathematics?” By asking follow-up questions as needed, Edwards made sure each student said something about the nature and role of definitions in mathematics. After that introductory discussion, each student was handed the following definition as it appears below. Binary operations were being studied in class, but the definition of group had not yet been presented. Definition 1 Let G be a nonempty set together with a binary operation that assigns to each ordered pair (a, b) of elements of G an element of G denoted by a b. We say G is a group under if the following three properties are satisfied. 1. The operation is associative; that is, (a b) c = a (b c) for all a, b, c in G. 2. There is an element e (called the identity) in G, such that a e = e a = a for all a in G. 3. For each element a in G, there is an element b in G (called the inverse of a) such that a b = b a = e. After reading the definition, each student was given these three tasks to complete. Set: R, the set of real numbers Binary Operation: Ordinary subtraction, Is R a group under subtraction? Set: R, the set of real numbers Binary Operation: The operation ⊕ where a⊕ b = a+ b+ 3 Is R a group under ⊕? Set: R, the set of real numbers Binary Operation: Ordinary multiplication Is R a group under multiplication? Abstract Algebra Interview 2Algebra Interview 2

Student Teachers’ Conceptions of Mathematical Proof

ion Step two is for each student teacher, individually, to produce their own representation of their conception of mathematical proof using any or all of the above key terms (or others that they might choose), arranging them on a blank piece of paper from their own perspective, and joining Mathematics Education Review, Volume 9, May 1997 pp21-32 27 key terms in what they consider a meaningful w...

A Mathematical Optimization Model for Scheduling Student Classes in Corona-Living Conditions

Due to the widespread outbreak of Covid-19, many of the world's top universities have decided to hold the next semester virtually. In our country, too, the forecasts show a red situation for some areas in terms of corona prevalence. Due to the large number of students living in these areas, planning for the next semester of universities should be more focused on e-education. According to the in...

How to begin a new topic in mathematics: does it matter to students' performance in mathematics?

The authors use Canadian data from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study to examine six instructional methods that mathematics teachers use to introduce new topics in mathematics on performance of eighth-grade students in six mathematical areas (mathematics as a whole, algebra, data analysis, fraction, geometry, and measurement). Results of multilevel analysis with students nest...

The effectiveness of mathematics education on numerical sense and visual-spatial working memory of girls with mathematical problems

Introduction: One of the problems of children with math disorders is the problem of working memory and sense of numbers, which can be increased by teaching math. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mathematics education on the numerical sense and visual-spatial working memory of first-grade elementary school girls with mathematical problems. Method: The method of this re...
